How Moniepoint’s People Operations team builds systems, solves problems and shapes culture

Two words that come to mind when I think of Constance? Thoughtful and resourceful. She’s one of my go-to people at Moniepoint, always ready with an answer, whether it’s how many people were on leave last week or how to untangle a tricky issue.

From review cycles to manager training, Constance helps shape the systems behind Moniepoint’s employee experience.

As a Team Lead on People Operations, she ensures that people across the company feel seen, heard, and supported. At Moniepoint, HR is made up of four distinct sub-teams: People Operations (where Constance sits), Talent Acquisition, Learning and Development (L&D), and Rewards. Her work touches every DreamMaker( that’s what we call employees at Moniepoint), whether it’s through kind reminders during review season, a necessary company update, or the performance data that shapes team-wide decisions.

She joined in September 2022 as one of just three HR Business Partners (HRBPs) supporting over 300 people. “From day one, I was thrown into fire-fighting,” she says, but that fast start built a reputation for always finding answers or improving systems.

Problem-Solver-in-Chief

Constance jokingly refers to herself as a “Chief Issue Resolution Officer.” Her days often begin with escalations from the HRBPs she manages. “We’re managing several moving parts, and a lot of people think we’re idle until they step into our shoes.”

In reality, the People Operations team plays a crucial role in shaping business outcomes. Whether it’s designing better performance systems, reviewing feedback from thousands of employees, or advising on policies, Constance and her team keep things moving, so every DreamMaker feels supported to do their best work.

One of her proudest achievements? Collaborating with the L&D team to build Moniepoint’s Middle Management Training Program. As the team scaled, many individual contributors suddenly found themselves leading others. This training helped them transition into leadership confidently and has since become an annual initiative.

But her impact doesn’t stop at strategy or spreadsheets. What sets Constance apart is how she brings empathy into even the most complex people systems.

The heart and the hard data: What People Operations really does

One of Constance’s guiding philosophies is putting people at the centre of every policy. “People aren’t just data points. They have lives, fears, and joys. If someone’s not performing, there’s always a reason. If someone’s thriving, there’s usually a story there too.”

But empathy doesn’t mean working on guesswork. “We don’t rely on vibes. We look at the data,” she says. Whether it’s performance feedback, survey responses, or employee movement trends, her team uses real-time insights to improve policies, close gaps, and advocate for what people actually need.

For Constance, data and empathy go hand in hand. She believes People Operations should be both the compass and conscience of the company. “We’re here to ask: What does this decision mean for the people? Are they supported to do their best work? Do they feel appreciated?”

Sometimes, the biggest impact isn’t in sweeping policy changes but in simply listening. “Some people just want to be heard,” she said. “It’s not always about fixing things, but about listening long enough to find the middle ground.”

The joy and the weight of the work

Some of the most meaningful moments in Constance’s work happen quietly, behind the scenes.

Like the time a DreamMaker in Abuja was experiencing pregnancy complications. Her husband was away, so she reached out to her manager in Lagos, who quickly contacted Constance, asking if anyone nearby could support her.

Within minutes, one of the HRBPs was at the hospital. “A few months later, she sent me a photo of her baby,” Constance recalled, eyes lighting up. “I burst into tears. I was so happy to see that both mother and baby were okay. That’s when it hits you, what we do really matters.”

But not every story ends in joy. She also remembers the deep grief of losing a DreamMaker who passed away after surgery. The team later renamed a switch in her honour. “There are tears in this job, too,” she said. “But part of the work is learning how to hold space for both the hard moments and the hopeful ones.”

Beyond People Operations

Outside of work, Constance is many things: a badminton player, a reader, a former blogger, and an advocate for underserved children.

She lights up when she talks about literature. Her favourite book last year was Lessons in Chemistry, about a chemist-turned-TV star who teaches people how to cook through science. “I loved how determined she was, how she never let her circumstances define her.” This year, Yellowface made her stop and reflect on authorship, culture, and voice. She loves her Kindle, and reads in short bursts whenever she can.

She also used to write fiction and lifestyle reviews, but has paused for a while, unsure if people would enjoy her work. The spark is still there, and I encourage her to start writing again.  

But one of her dearest causes is supporting children with developmental disorders and individuals battling cancer. Years ago, she volunteered with the Elevate Foundation in Makoko, a slum in Lagos, mentoring and providing resources to marginalised children. While she’s currently focused on her own healing, the dream remains. “If I had all the time and money in the world, I’d create a safe space for them, one that provides rehabilitation, research, and rest,” she said. “The world can be heavy. They deserve light.”

Rooted in purpose

No matter where she finds herself, one of Constance’s guiding principles remains the same: people matter.

Every survey she reads, every check-in she holds, every system she improves, it’s all about making work feel a little more human and helping people feel a little more seen. Because when people are supported, they thrive. And when they thrive, companies do too.
